Happy Birthday Canada!
Canada Day 2011 inspired community spirit and national pride throughout Enderby. Visitors and local residents were welcomed into Enderby to celebrate Canadian culture with a range of events, activities, entertainment, and a massive birthday cake.
"From mobility scooter races to a parade to a classic car show to kids' games to a free swim at the pool, we had something for everybody," says Enderby Chamber Recreation Manager Willow Burton.
Local residents awoke to a particularly festive Canada Day in Enderby. Early in the morning of July 1, Enderby's public gardener, Mike Lawson, worked with his crew to place Canadian flags and ribbons throughout town.
"Placing the flags all over town put everybody in the perfect mood to celebrate Canada Day," says Enderby Mayor Dee Wejr. "I thought that Enderby looked wonderful decorated in Canadian colours and symbols."
"Canada Day is about showing our pride in being Canadian. I love Canada Day," proclaims Wejr. "My grandson accompanied me in the parade. It was a great chance for him to understand what it means to be a Canadian. It was an opportunity to celebrate Canada and to foster that spirit in the next generation."
The day began with a pancake breakfast at the Lions Gazebo in Riverside Park. The crowd then moved to the downtown core where a mobility scooter race was held. This was followed by a large parade. The events continued at Barnes Park with a large classic car show, kids' games, live music, a wrestling demonstration, face painting, birthday cake, and a free swim at the outdoor pool.
Much of what made the celebration so successful had to do with the broad range of businesses and community residents who supported the event, including David Adams and his parade crew, Sean Hamilton and the car club, Scott Hemenway and the Evangelical Chapel, Marketplace IGA, Mike Lawson and his team, Bombshells Tanning and Esthetics, the Key Team of RE/MAX Enderby, the Enderby & District Credit Union, Thrash Wrestling, Twice but Nice, Mabel Lake Golf and Country Club, Mainstreet Pizza, and the Enderby Lions Club.
